Environmental and Climate Justice Pillars
Across Maryland, Black and Brown communities suffer first and worst from the effects of climate change and environmental racism: polluted water, toxic air, disappearing landscapes, housing and schools within yards of incinerators and highways, puts our people into harm’s way.

The NAACP Maryland State Conference (NAACP MSC) Environmental and Climate Justice Committee supports and empowers community leadership to address human and civil rights issues resulting from environmental and climate-related causes, by advocating for these three objectives:

  • People

    Strengthen Community Resilience and Livability

We equip communities for resiliency and livability by integrating policies and practices for housing, food justice, transportation equity, education, civil rights in emergency management, voter participation.

  • Power

Advance Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Legislation

We advance legislation to democratize clean energy access. We pass renewable and energy efficiency standards and set up sustainable mechanisms for renewable energy access within BIPOC communities.  At the same time, we develop revenue generating leadership opportunities and job training for the new green economy.

  • Planet

Reduce Harmful Emissions, Particularly Greenhouse Gases

We shut down coal plants and other toxic facilities that pollute air, water, and soils, making our planet unlivable – first and worst for BIPOC communities – and eventually for every living being. We further advocacy to strengthen the development, monitoring, and enforcement of standards and regulations on all levels. We hold government and corporations accountable.
